scintilla10: Steve & Dustin both turning their heads to look over their shoulders (Stranger Things - Dustin & Steve)
[personal profile] scintilla10
As always, I'm having a great time with [community profile] ficinabox, but there's still SO much of the collection that I haven't even glanced at. But I received an array of fabulous gifts, in a mix of fandoms and mediums!

Stranger Things
[fic] Jocks Are Weird (But Maybe Not That Weird?)
Steve/Eddie, 5071 words, rated E
Skinnydipping, jerk-off bets, mutual masturbation! Eddie is oblivious/disbelieving, Steve is trying really hard to seduce him. Delightful iddy premise, very fun and hot.

[fic] Hello, From Camp Winona Lake
Steve/Eddie, 6129 words, rated G
Epistolary! Twelve-year-old Eddie writes letters to Wayne from summer camp. Love young Eddie's letter-writing style! And clutching my heart over the ambiguity of the ending.

Original Work
[fic] No Shade in Shadow
Sensible Hedge Witch/Lonely Court Sorceress, 3890 words, rated G
Really lovely prose in this one! Fascinating glimpses of magic worldbuilding (tethered demons!), and a focus on a prickly, complex relationship where two very different people end up working together. Loved this very much.

[fic + logic puzzle] the love life project
Librarian in a Magic Library/Witch, 1771 words + puzzle, rated T
A librarian helps her crush figure out which book had the potion recipe she'd looking for. So charming!! The frame story is super cute, full of flirting and pining and love potions, and the puzzle is well-designed and satisfying.

[fic + logic puzzle] the search for moth man
Nobleman/Mysterious Man He Danced with at a Masquerade Ball Who Never Gave His Name, 3234 words, rated G
A pining young man and his sister work together to figure out which of the attendees at the recent masquerade he danced with! Such a delightful set-up for a puzzle! I really loved the siblings' banter and the society gossip that allowed for the clues to emerge. The puzzle was a bit tricky, which made it especially satisfying to solve. :D

Guess who’s gonna speedrun the rest of their Fannish 50 posts b/c HOLY SHIT the rest of the year got away from me and before we knew it it was December and we’re now a mere THREE WEEKS from the new year? 😅

Anyways HI HEYLO, nothing much going on with me outside of thinking too much about the state of the world and drowning myself in Model Debut 4 (b/c Furyu RANDOMLY released it last week xD) and ship stuff to keep from going crazy. You know THE USUAL 🥰 (Work has also been pretty crazy since I’ve taken on more responsibilities, another reason why I just haven’t been online as much xD)

Anyways, hope y’all have been doing ok. What’s the weather like where you are? It got hella cold here recently, but it’s (surprisingly) not unwelcome! Seeing all the different colored leaves and being able to break out my criminal amount of hoodies and pullovers has been really nice. Taking each cold day as it comes. xD

Also, The Mangar.

Taking a brief break from building RG Exia to catch up on other things and eat... And I was randomly reminded of a community that I saw advertised the other day. No check-ins, except for needing to fill out a form for every single post. No exclusions except for this stuff that actually excludes a lot of people (and is overly vague)... All these formats allowed, except actually works have to be transformative. (I suspect the mods literally don't know what they're saying there?) Anyway, the initial hook was a good one and perhaps I'll steal it as it's certainly not nailed down.

RG Exia is an interesting build so far. Unlike any kit I have built, ever, the starting point is the legs. But this is also my first RG so perhaps it's a line-specific thing?

I realized earlier that I haven't heard my upstairs neighbor in at least a few days. I can't remember the last time I saw his car, either, so I guess he's headed somewhere warmer for the season. He always used to, and then stopped at one point, and now I can't remember what he's done for the last few years. ^^;;

Combination hangar and manger, the Mangar is a silver manger with colorful LED lights and model Acerby decorating a little Christmas tree while model 00 Gundam attempts to untangle some garland.

I'm working on The Mangar again this year. I've finally got it (mostly) de-mossed and painted, and mounted the first set of little LED lights I found. There is a ways to go, but that's fine.

  • surgical recovery continues apace. The incision has mostly healed, although the knot of dissolving stitches at one end got caught when I was trying to clean it and pulled it slightly open, so I've now cut off the knot, put a fancy steri-strip over it to hold it together, and a little circular sticking plaster over that. Internals still noticeably sore, externals are itchy; have been putting 'scar therapy gel' on which seems to help (it was in the cupboard; I do not know what any of the ingredients are). I see the surgeon on Tuesday for follow up.
  • reviewers comments for my candidacy proposal are in (received late on Friday). I'm not actually sure what the next step is -- I'll work it out tomorrow. I think it said 'no edits' which is a surprise, given that I have been reading and annotating weekly since submitting, and there are a lot of 'this could be clearer' and 'what did you mean here?' notes. Also, I found another answer to one of the reviewers questions from the presentation about why books and not films/tv, which is that I'm hoping to get a wider range of cultural influences (and I have a paper from Italy in which almost all of the TV/movies that the kids reported was from the USA, which very much supports my 'this would be an issue' argument)
  • there was an HDR and supervisors lunch run by the school I'm in on Monday. This was very interesting and I met a lot of people. Including one who I was unsurprised to discover is an acquaintance of Youngest. Very queer (not very surprising) and neurodiverse (should not have been surprising) bunch that I met.
  • weather has been Warm. To the point that [personal profile] artisanat has been volunteering to put the air-con on.
  • There have been some changes to the mix of South Asian grocers on High Road. One of the two north of Bunnings has gone (and the one still there no longer stocks palak paneer in their shelf-stable preprepared meals; not the regular nor the tofu/vegan option. They do, however, still have some vegan options). There is a new one that is further south than the ones I was aware of -- nearly to where the petrol station is. To the point that it is still so new that not all the shelves are stocked; we couldn't find the box meals there at all, but we had to rush because we ran out of time. Thus there are still three that I'm aware of.
  • Monday's rehearsal I went with the intention to play pizzicato, which was mostly fine, but I got there to discover the C string broken (spare was at home) so had to transpose some of the work up an octave, which ah, that needs practice. As does one of the sections we hadn't got to that I'd failed to realise has a lot of fast notes.
  • craft has stalled
  • reading - one of these week's I'll get around to doing another reading post. Over on the Book Club of Habitica Discord I've joined the TBR Bingo challenge for Dec/Jan and set myself a bingo card of 16 books from my 'paused' list. So far, I've finished 1, which is progress but not as fast as I want.

What an incredibly busy week! The year end slide is absolutely in full force. But I have gotten things ordered, gotten things sent, etc.

Yesterday was a day of shoveling the 'rents out a bit, mailing packages, ordering a holiday pie, and picking up my first 3D printed request from the library. It will need some trimming (okay a lot of trimming!) before I even know if it'll work, but it's a conversion head for an HG GINN, to make it into Elijah's GINN. I did in fact tell boycritter that we needed to run to the bookie joint so I could get a little head. It was also their book sale weekend and I ended up with a couple of books, a few CDs, and a half-sized binder of clear-pages that will work great for model decal storage.

The weather was awful midweek. Just absolute snowpocalypse for a couple of days, and the worst was that it warmed up and then the temperature dropped like a rock, so everything is now frozen hell. It's supposed to warm up again next week but idk how much that'll help. I think I burned a lot of my ability to can just driving from place to place. (Also did some untoward things to my shoulders while working under the dash of an old Mustang.)

Really the only interesting thing from my week was a small brightly colored tank, lol. I did have a couple more of my Black Friday purchases finally roll in and I think I've officially crossed the space-to-store-stuff rubicon. ^^; Time to get building.

Also time to catch up on my inbox.

We have a new Classic Mega Man announced! Mega Man Dual Override!

... predictably the fans are being the most stupid whining motherfuckers ever to not be mercifully drowned in a toilet bowl. *lies flat*

Apparently this isn't the only thing coming down the pike, though, according to Protodude:

"So, what I can say:

This project has been in development on and off for a couple of years. It is not Taisen. It is, and at one point was titled, Mega Man 12. It was originally planned to be announced earlier this year, as far back as spring.

It is a keystone project for the 40th anniversary. Not the only one, but a big one.
"

Spose I'll keep a sliver of thought and hope alive for X9 or anything X-series tbh, but we'll see -- Capcom deciding Mega Man is going to be upjumped to a core IP could mean just Classic, or ...

Tanks A Lot

It looks like I forgot to mention acquiring a pair of tanks from M at comic-con. (Wait no, I did, it's just buried in commentary, whoops.) They're 1/144 scale and were priced right (as in, I would have paid but didn't have to) and I finally got one built and painted with some paint markers I was trying out.

Because I am silly, and the best thing to do with German WWII tanks is be silly, here is Astray Blue Frame 2nd with a tank:

Blue white and orange model of Gundam Astray Blue Frame Second, a humanoid piloted robot, kneeling beside a matching model tank on a green cutting board.

Blue white and orange model of Gundam Astray Blue Frame Second holding the matching model tank in its hands as if she is offering it to the viewer.

The tank itself needs a bit of glue at some point to not fall apart at the tiniest of movements or drafts, along with a tiny hand-painted snake-mark, but overall it passes the two-foot test and I am pleased. (Blue Frame also needs a bit more work but I misplaced her decals and have gotten varying degrees of annoyed at her color-correction. I'll get there.)

Well into 'it's not one thing after another, the damn things overlap' territory here

  • nominal deadline for my confirmation of candidature to have been submitted has passed without anything from my reviewers (one of three from our school has theirs)
  • Eldest's quilt has been somewhat abandoned, which is annoying me but I haven't had the cope
  • Instead I've been working on logistics of Youngest's quilt, which is very heavy in the planning stages (picture quilt, converting it from a photo)
  • Took a week at home on light duties last week, this week I'm back in the office. Did surprisingly well yesterday. Surgery site looks to have healed on the surface but the internals are still quite sore, so I'm still sleeping with the post-surgery bra.
  • Middlest and their partners have bought a house. They move in January. There was a messy blow up with the fourth housemate, who has since moved out, so they are learning how they fit together as a trio, and it sounds like things are going well. R's parents are providing lots of important support for the process.
  • Saw the nurse for follow up on Monday. They didn't like the wound support stuff I'd found in the pharmacy (because it is plasticky) and replaced it with a stiff fabric 'can be washed but blow dry it after' dressing that was so annoying/itchy I took it off last night (and it took off lots of ick; that area has an unsurprising build up of Stuff) and put the second piece of the wound support stuff on. That is so much better -- it is a clear plastic lattice that actually moves with the area, rather than digging in. Also, I'm not reacting to the glue.
  • My middle sibling and their partner are moving to Perth for two years. D has a job at UWA, K's job will allow 'remote' work from the Perth office. Amusingly, D described UWA as 'not restructuring' and Youngest laughed when reading that out. My comment was that from my perspective it has never not been restructuring, it is just the level that is changing. Plus, there was a leaked minutes from some meeting that suggested they were going to try and get a merger with Curtin, which I learned about when the Curtin Guild sent a 'not if we can help it' email out to all students. Pointed out to sibling that as they and I share a family name there is a non-zero chance they are going to get spotted as related.

Finn/Fionna Parallels

bedes: An icon of Marcy from Amphibia thinking (marcy)

Finn's physical degradation is being paralleled by the degradation of Fionna's moral backbone.

She's losing herself. She agreed to work with her friend's abusive, power-hungry mother (thus pushing him away), and is obsessively chasing this fantasy with Phelix despite him having a girlfriend. She doesn't recognize the effort her friends put in to the event. She is single-mindedly chasing this fantasy of being a hero, while, in reality, she is hurting those she is trying to "save".

The threat looms — both of a physical death (Finn), and a symbolic death of the self (the "Fifi" future).

A lot of people in the MILGRAM fandom (especially English-speaking MILGRAM fandom) state that Haruka is autistic-coded, as if it's fact. Most recognize that Haruka is coded as disabled. (If you didn't recognize that, I hope this essay will help to explain why.) However, to state that he is coded as autistic specifically is incorrect. Haruka is coded as intellectually disabled.

Now, there are likely two things that contribute to this issue. One is the invisibility of intellectual disability as a whole, and another is the fact that a lot of this has to do with things that only someone who speaks Japanese would understand (such as complex vs non-complex words in Japanese).

In this essay, I plan to lay out what an intellectual disability is and how it differs from neurodivergencies such as autism or ADHD. After that, I want to discuss the way Haruka speaks and uses words, the symbolism in his MVs, and how this lends to him being coded as intellectually disabled. Finally, I want to discuss why this even matters at all. Because, in truth, viewing Haruka as autistic instead of intellectually disabled leaves the viewer misunderstanding his story in a huge way that seems far too common in English-speaking MILGRAM fandom. So, I hope you listen to what I have to say.

From Far Away 1-14 (Kyoko Hikawa) - for a beautifully-drawn shoujo manga with an interesting plot, this was such a slog that I am absolutely baffled. Like, I have bounced off this multiple times and basically made it through this attempt by skimming towards the end. Absolutely should have been my thing, absolutely was not. Base plot is isekai/portal fantasy, schoolgirl in a world with a bit of magic with a strong romance and good supporting cast.

"Gaiking" - the Force Five version of the series, presented on five DVD-Rs that I picked up many years ago. Despite this being an incomplete version of an already-shaved series, it wasn't difficult to follow and was pretty enjoyable. Had a 'movie version' added at the end.

RahXephon - complete series + movie. This is one of those "I will need to watch this again to fully follow wtf just happened" pseudo-mecha anime from the earlier part of the century. I liked it, and I liked the cast for the most part, though every now and then it felt like it was trying to go the harem route for no reason. I have a full DVD set with all the beautiful liner notes but I apparently also picked up a thin Blu-ray set at some point...

So, From Far Away can go, Gaiking and the thin RahXephon set can stay. Technically I guess this is a 50/50?

Anyway, even though we're into Actual Advent territory, I'm just gonna keep going and probably all through next year?

[personal profile] miscellanium

he plays such a dumb character in this movie. (ariel needs legs voice) i can't not fuck him

the "is it worth watching this for lawrence dane" rating: 3/5

the plot: remember the cop characters from "it seemed like a good idea at the time"? no? that's ok, it doesn't matter, there's no continuity here other than some reheated gags. john candy's dumb pizza-loving cop kopek and his superior officer, lawrence dane's sergeant broom, end up responsible for investigating a sexy woman's kidnapping. except there's a second kidnapping note for her, then a third. she's supposed to be making an opera debut even though she can't sing and would rather do burlesque at her boyfriend's club, but her rich guardian (played by peter cook phoning it in) is having her kidnapped for an insurance scam and she tries to kidnap herself so she doesn't have to debut. so who's responsible for the third and real kidnapping? broom and kopek do not find out. not on purpose, anyway.

like its predecessor, this is not a good movie. that said, there's a charm to it that the first movie doesn't have at all and it's mainly due to dane and candy. richard monette as a drag queen trying to help strippers with their choreography is an absolute scene-stealer and an instant highlight of the movie. i expect he and dane already knew each other since monette was part of the stratford shakespeare festival in 1965, around the same time dane was getting his start there as larry zahab, before monette went on to become its artistic director in 1994. wish i knew what their interactions were like.... this one is also complicated since it's got some period-typical anti-asian racism and other racisms as well, technically? except they're all typical examples of jokesters trying to have it both ways since every time the point seems to be that the white people are dumb/incompetent compared to the non-whites. arguably more tolerable than something like "sixteen candles" which full disclosure i never finished because of that one character. i don't know what dane would have thought, especially with his experience of being pigeonholed into roles as ethnic stereotypes when he was first starting out versus being treated as white here. the joke where dane's character thinks he needs a spanish translator for someone speaking italian is pretty funny to me tho.

he is also Very Physical With Other Men in this. sure, some of it seems like it's supposed to be along the lines of "ha ha the homophobe is made to look gay and the idea of being gay is hilarious", but i will take it. i will take his unquestioning acceptance of monette's female impersonation and his nervous attraction to the same. a fascinating follow-up to the arguably best and definitely most controversial scene from the previous movie where broom and kopek are dropping anti-gay slurs like there's no tomorrow.

this is pretty easy to find online since it's now marketed as a john candy movie which, yeah, technically. it was one of the very first movies he did, which is still notable even if he wasn't given many chances to shine. (he had a little more energy in his first movie as kopek, versus the writers now seeming more interested in emphasizing his weight and candy seems a little checked out as a result.) the recent john candy documentary included a couple clips from these two movies but didn't discuss either at all, which seemed a little strange to me. (the documentary also completely omitted any mention of the clown murders, which is a shame because it's one of the first roles where he was given something a little meatier.) the documentary didn't really get into his beginnings as a film actor even though it was focused a lot on his feelings as an actor, so i was a little disappointed in that but otherwise it's a fine feature and you should consider watching it. should you consider watching find the lady? i mean, i guess? for dane, sure. he's in it enough that a dane cut isn't warranted, and it's not unfunny imo. mickey rooney as one of the criminals gives a mildly amusing performance in the dane-less scenes. watching it under some kind of influence might get you the best results tbh.

highlight: there was a bit where he was combing his hair while looking in the rearview mirror. very sexy of him

I've done another bit of security-pruning and circle adjustment. Occasionally I just unfollow/un-access accounts that haven't posted for a rather long time. And I saw a few folks that are active again, so re-followed. ^_^ This is also a reminder that you can unfollow/etc. me for any reason and I won't take it personally.

I posted up a [community profile] holiday_wishes post over here. The most important bits are to tell me what to work on with my website and also send me Gundams, lol. I'm still granting all the wishes I can. This is such a fun time of year.

If you're in the USA (sorry, int'l shipping sucks), you can have some of my stuff over here. I really should make these posts more often as I spelunk.

I need to go through my communities and make/add some sort of No AI guideline to each. I just pulled a drabble from a community because they're allowing AI slop to be posted. It's now crossposted to my spaces and deleted from theirs. I'd always meant to create more for that community but that sure isn't happening now.

Some things I've been up to:
  • Watching Heated Rivalry, and having a complete blast! I enjoy escaping into m/m hockey romance books on occasion, so hearing that one was being adapted made me excited for the show - and it's been SO great so far!

  • Holding off on watching Stranger Things Season 5 until I have time to watch properly. I'll probably be diving in this weekend.

  • Feeling a bit wiped out at work, and so ready for the stretch of time off I've got over the holidays (soon, SOON).

  • Enjoying two different advent calendars: a mini puzzle one we bought several years ago, and a tea one!

  • Eagerly anticipating [community profile] ficinabox collection opening tomorrow :D

Also, I got to cuddle an eight-week old puppy recently! What a bundle of wriggly, fluffy mischief.
