Today's quote (and oops)

I'm getting into Very Strange Territory in some of my reading at the moment, and sometimes my interpretations of what I'm reading are going a bit sideways*. To whit, I read the following two sentences:

Children have different developmental needs depending on their age and personality. One-year-olds eat more books than they read, which is why the sturdy board book material is so important.

and my first thought was "because they need more fibre in their diet?"

*I have until Thursday--by which I am interpreting that to mean Very Early Friday, because the supervisor said they will read it Friday--to write a page of methodology, and exactly what methodology (not methods, I have Ideas for that) is going to be applied to the children's books section of the project is giving me grief. I would very much like to have a paragraph on my methodology and why I think it is useful by bedtime tonight, and not have bedtime be after 11pm.

Candle Arc #1: p. 1 color test

Weirdly credible watercolor test of a comic page from Candle Arc #1 (image has slightly cleaned-up lineart as I wasn't sure this brand of paper was going to work out so why sink in more effort before the test).

I'm annoyed that I cannot for the life of me find a US-based (as a USAn) color digest size (5.5"x8.5") zine/booklet/comic printer that handles print on demand. I absolutely cannot commit to physical fulfillment as a business model even as a side hustle (health); but at-home color printers that do anything larger than US letter (8.5"x11") or MAYBE A4 are extortionately expensive, and I am never making back any money sunk into this.

I need to resign myself to hand-watercoloring like THREE copies for the very few interested friend/family people (and myself) and give up on trying to make physical color copies available because quite literally the ROI makes zero sense and I have orchestration homework waiting.

Why digest? Because I've found paper (...for now) I can print onto with my laser printer (which only goes up to US letter/A4) and then do watercolor on top of without (a) jamming my printer because it's too thick (b) destroying the paper once I do even a gentle wash because it's too thin.

Even if I could produce color comic zines at home, however, the bottleneck remains that I absolutely can't do physical fulfillment on a regular/reliable business, and I am never going to sell enough indie/hobbyist comics to justify HIRING someone to handle fulfillment, so this ends here. :p

(If anyone has leads on print on demand printers that work well for this kind of thing, I'm all ears, although I'm not optimistic. This is weirdly difficult to Google possibilities for as well.)

Costco Cookie During Ye Olde ReNagi Hours

idk what they putting in these Costco cookies but they got my ass HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER šŸ„°šŸ˜‹šŸ¤¤

Anyways I’m sorry can I just share a passage from my current ReNagi WIP for a second b/c I wrote this at 3AM and now that I’m re-reading it I’m MELTING (just like Nagisa after Ren said this OSJFIDODJFID xD)

Saw prompt post from a writer I follow on Pillowfort and got inspired by the prompt ā€œYou make me feel like I’m homeā€! The entire fic is still WIP, but I really loved this passage and wanted to share!!

ā€œI don’t need an apartment to tell me what I already know.ā€

Nagisa immediately raised an eyebrow to the air, a smile unfurling on his lips. ā€œOh yeah? And what’s that?ā€

ā€œYou feel like home. Home to me is wherever you are, and always will be.ā€ The words are immediate, not laced with Ren’s usual hesitation, words from the heart that he couldn’t hide anymore.

He’d always tried running from the truth before—realizing that he could no longer imagine a world that didn’t have Nagisa in it—but being able to bask in that truth like the warm sun after shivering in cold meant so much more.

I'm even getting a comm to go alongside this fic I'M CRAZY (I'm sorry I keep going insane over them, I will ABSOLUTELY go crazy about ReNagi again in 1-3 business days HJDKHSJKDS)

Reading Notes

[personal profile] kalloway posted a book report / media roundup, which made me realise that I haven't done one of these in a while. The most recent I can find is from early April, which means I have four months worth of reading to annotate. *sigh*. I wish I remembered these things more frequently. This is only going to be longer works; short stories have been somewhat captured elsewhere. This is approximately in order april to august, but little attempt has been made to create an exact timeline.

I'm a little bemused to discover that I've finished 20 books in four months, even if some of them were carried over from previous and two were for uni.

four months means a lot of notes )

oops, wrong popular culture

I just saw what I assume is a Star Trek promotional image for one of the many shows that are around at the moment. I don't recognise any of the actors, and I'm choosing to not go down the relevant rabbit hole.

The important bit, is I saw said image, with people in yellow, red, and blue skivvies, and thought "I don't recognise any of those Wiggles".

Oops.

Farewell: Greg Hastings

Back channel, I hear that local folk musician Greg Hastings has passed away. I gather there is/was a public memorial, but I didn't hear the details. I'd gathered that they weren't well--there was a mention on stage at the Albany festival that people should go visit--but not any details.

I bought a tape of Windstorm from Greg at the Toodyay Folk Festival in about 1985 - possibly off a table on the verandah at one of the pubs. I played that tape until it ceased to function. Somewhen around 2005, I ended up chatting with Greg at the Fairbridge Folk Festival, and asked whether or not it was available for purchase. They were apologetic, but made noises about still having the master tape. And some time after that, I acquired the CD (probably also at Fairbridge, and the Festival tent). It is still one of my favourite albums.

Other people might remember Greg from Jenny's Place*, where I remember them as a regular. Also, I think, a sometimes member of the Mucky Duck bush band (although my memory could be faulty in either direction, such that was an always member, or was never a member and I have conflated two musicians). Greg also did kids shows - while our kids were in daycare, there was some kind of summer family picnic with Greg as the entertainer.

I was going to link my favourite song here, but I'm not finding it on any of the usual locations.

* folk music venue. I don't remember if it were weekly or monthly; we went intermittently. It was some kind of room around the back of the eponymous Jenny's house; large enough for a reasonable side friendly audience and a bit of space for performers. I was going in the 80s; I have no feel for how long it was running.

Book Report & Media Roundup, August 2nd Edition

I apparently haven't done one of these since March, which is both a surprise and not a surprise at all. ^^;;

Gundam Build Fighters, Build Fighters Try, and the Special Build Disc - a marathon rewatch, these are still a lot of fun and a gloriously weird love letter to gunpla. The Special Build Disc collects various ONAs and just... is a lot of fun.

The Knight Captain is the New Princess-to-Be 3 & 4 (Yasuko Yamaru) - this wraps up the series and it's just the right length. Cute series, has some weird twists, but the romance is just right.

Today's Menu for the Emiya Family 5 (TAa, etc.) - a lot of really wonderful character stuff in this one. Rider is so cute.

Gundam SEED Freedom - I apparently watched this again for research but I don't remember exactly what I was looking for. *shrugemoji* Also this remains hysterically terrible as an actual movie.

The Good Witch of the West - this was not a bad series, but most of it just didn't stick with me. It's an adaptation so I suspect something was just lost along the way. Seriously I can't remember enough about it to say anything else, it just... didn't stick.

Bride of Lochbarr (Margaret Moore) - one of the medievals I picked up back on indie bookstore day, this one had a few unexpected twists but was overall pretty good. Since I've been so stressed, it's good to have some brain-candy reading. (I've generally liked Moore's stuff but most of it isn't 'read more than once' stuff, either.)

Busou Shinki - I couldn't figure out why I had this until I remembered the Shinkis I used to see back fifteen years ago and oh, oh- This was a pretty fun series and ha! I ended up buying a used Shinki so I could finally have one. (I might be tempted to more, or maybe the newer Megami Device models, idk. Feels weird to build a Shinki?)

Zeta Gundam & A New Translation - so despite many attempts over the years, I had never actually seen Zeta Gundam. It's... it's a lot. It's at least twice as many plots and subplots as it needs, and it gets pretty brutal. I was expecting to dislike Kamille after the first episodes but he's actually pretty great. And I ended up really liking the Zeta Gundam itself, too. I ended up really disliking Beltorchika, like, I was not expecting that reaction? But yeah, liked Kamille, laughed a lot about how I'd mis-osmosed like 98% of the actual show despite having played through bits of it in games and whatnot, and had an entire experience. And then watched A New Translation because OW FUCK THAT ENDING FUCK. Like I will literally never watch that last episode again.

I have the first season of Bastard!! in right now, and then I should probably get back to my SEED Destiny rewatch, and then IDK. Just whatever is next in the pile, I guess. (And CCA but that won't take more than a morning.)

I should also do a separate post for last quarter's JFF offerings.

The Fannish 50 #19 and #20: Kingdom "All My Life I Had to Craft" Hearts

HAPPY FANNISH 50 FRIDAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! After a LONG break, WE BACK getting the weekend started right by talking about an old fave my from childhood!! This one is another double feature since both 19 and 20 were gonna be the same game AND the subject matter was gonna relate to each other anyways, so I figured why not!! xD Also HAPPY 20 FANNISH 50 POSTS, AYEEEEEEEE! *dances*

ANYWAYS, without further ado--*pulls up my blueberry iced tea*

19. Have you ever used a walkthrough? / 20. What's the best weapon you've ever used in a game?

Let me be the first to say that my history with Kingdom Hearts is vast, stretching as far as the eye can see. This (alongside The Bouncer) was the first game to REALLY captivate me when I got my first PS2, especially considering that it was the first game of its time to not only include Disney characters, but Final Fantasy characters, as well! I'd never seen anything like that, and it made me all the more happy that my dad saw it in Gamecrazy on the way home from work and said "this seems like something my kid would like" and brought it home. xD

I got through the game well enough since it was pretty self-explanatory, so no walkthrough needed there! Where I was left scratching my head and feeling the never-ending cycle of despair is trying to craft a weapon I very quickly became obsessed with upon seeing it: The Ultima Weapon.

The design alone was absolutely GORGEOUS, and that coupled with just how powerful it was was enough for me to try my hand at grabbing it!! Cue me looking up a guide on how to craft it then realizing I would have to craft all the recipes to even unlock it, then farm like crazy for the materials.

I'll be straight up: that did NOT get accomplished in KH1, so I tried my hand at it again in KH2 and it somehow felt even HARDER, but WORTH IT once I finally got it b/c I was going through MELTING stuff with that thing. xD (The recipe for it was easy to get, the materials? NOT SO MUCH xD)

The way I was taking pics on my phone to show my friends at school and on GaiaOnline that I FINALLY kicked the Crafting Demon (and maybe a few Moogles, sorry Moogles xD) in the face and won my ultimate prize!! Those were some good times. ; u; Maybe I'll load up my emulator and take another wack at KH2 one of these days xD

Thanks again for stopping by and taking a gander at my shenanigans! Next week we're gonna be talking about my very first horror game and how it made me take a one-way ticket to NOPEVILLE, located in HELL NAW county!! xD Hope to see you there *goosebumps voice* IF YOU DARE MUHAHAHAHHAHA--ok I'm sorry! xD

Anyways, have a good weekend!! Stay cool if you're caught in the heatwave, and stay warm if it's getting chillier for you! šŸ’•

Monthly Stuff Roundup

I went to the doctor, explained why I was there, and got a prescription to hopefully fix that. Also had blood work done which is back and while a couple of things aren't quite where they should be, they're not, like, off in the woods wandering around in the dark. I will take all of this.

July was indeed too fucking hot.

and then, August, which is at least starting out with the temperatures a little more manageable.

I dropped out of [community profile] sunshine_revival after the first day... Good idea, did not personally jive, alas.

[P5] Missed Connections

Fandom: Persona 5 universe
Characters: Ren Amamiya (canon), Nagisa Kamishiro (canon), Yota Kurosawa (canon)
Rating: Gen
Words: 686
Summary: Yota Kurosawa gets a reminder about letting go of his crush on Nagisa.

Notes: "Khajiit has wares if you have coin" but it's just me back on my ReNagi BS HSJKHDJKS Got the idea for this one a few days ago and figured why not show off a teeny tiny head canon I have for Ren b/c REN AMAMIYA DON'T PLAY ABOUT HIS NAGISA 🤭 (Apologies in advance to poor Yota xD)

Also it should be noted that one of the songs from my ReNagi playlist came on in my shuffle while I was posting this so consider this fic BLESSED BY THE GODS xD Anyways, if you happen to read my nonsense, enjoy!! ^ o^)/

****

"Oh hey, that's Nagisa, right?"

At the mere mention of his name, Yota whipped his head around, instantly spotting his red-haired teammate halfway down the street. He noticed that he was texting away on his phone in front of the crepe shop, headphone in one ear as he bobbed his head to whatever he was listening to. Yota thought to call out to him, but before he could open his mouth, another figure approaches Nagisa from behind.

ReNagi o'Clock b/c I SAID SO

Once again having ReNagi thoughts b/c I am ROLLING AROUND IN MY FEELS FOR THEM

oh ho…ReNagi mood boardā€¦šŸ„°

I’m still in the process of building their ship playlist which is really just ā€œsongs I feel fit their vibe as a coupleā€, but a mood board could be funā€¦šŸ‘€

I haven’t done one for a canon ship since my days screeching over LeoMal, so maybe we can run that back 🤭

(I only have a few canon character ships I like so when I like them I like them A LOT, OK DO NOT PERCEIVE ME 🫣)

Sharing one of my favorite songs from their playlist b/c you can't go wrong with some Daft Punk and this song fits them so WELL and my heart EXPLODES whenever I listen to it and think of them ; u;

I've just discovered that the delightful gmail has started marking comment notifications as spam. Mondaysh

Where were we last? This week was not a terrible Monday! It certainly kept me busy, but despite the heat I was able to be productive and somewhat lively after I got home. (I have no such hopes for tonight.)

I took the kitchen garbage can down to the car wash hose and sprayed it out; I'll have to do this again at some point and actually take soap/a scrub brush, but just a spray did miracles and now that I know it's that easy, I should do all the garbage cans before the end of the season.

Still on the high of new Gundam Wing stuff - new manga + Frozen Teardrop teaser. (I now need to re/visit the whole series properly and finally read the Glory of Losers manga, which I have started multiple times and then the universe happens...) [personal profile] taichara has been helping me identify ancient gunpla kits that I adopted many, many years ago for the intention of painting/custom practice. Mostly, it is Altron that keeps tripping me up.

After finishing the Gundvolva, I built HG Vidar who ended up with some spot-painting... (but not fixing that blue this time around - I can absolutely see picking up another kit in the future though and trying for... whatever will fix that) Working on an M1 Astray now as preliminary research for IIBB. It looks like there's a tie on my poll...

Also, [personal profile] taichara got me a roll of sparkly plastic lace for my birthday so I spent my 'hurry up and wait' time at work weaving. I managed a couple different kinds but one other just didn't work out. I don't know if I just really don't remember the stitching or it needs a variety of colors to look proper. (I also got a couple of books, one of which was photos of Mexican-American Cemeteries which was interesting but went a little too hard on the photos being artistic over informative and the accompanying essays (not all by the photographer) leaning in some weird directions including one insinuating that families replacing deteriorating homemade memorials with modern granite is somehow showing a lack of love for the deceased what even.)
